2013: Digital Spy

Dexter is over – but if you’re still in mourning for the serial killer thriller, then we’ve got good news – the eighth and final season, plus a complete series box-set, is now available to purchase and enjoy on DVD and Blu-ray…

To mark the release, Digital Spy spoke with Yvonne Strahovski – the actress and cult favourite who played tortured Hannah for the show’s final two years.

In our exclusive interview, Strahovski talks Dexter’s controversial finale, Hannah’s post-TV future and embracing her role as a geek goddess…

Yvonne on her time with Dexter…
I felt quite honored to have survived one season as a guest star, because we know most guest stars on Dexter end up dead! It was really nice to come back, but even during season eight, I thought I’d probably die.

I had no idea that Hannah would play such a pivotal role, all the way to the end. It was a surprise to me. I’m very honoured to be part of such a critically-acclaimed, Emmy-winning series.

Yvonne on her own Dexter finale theories…
I knew it wouldn’t end happily ever after. Part of me wondered whether Dexter (Michael C Hall) was going to kill Hannah, or whether Hannah was going to do something to Harrison (Jadon Wells) or take a dark turn.

Or maybe something happens to Harrison under Hannah’s care, accidentally, and it would’ve just caused complete chaos for Dexter and Hannah’s relationship. There are a few things that I’d fleshed out in my mind.

Yvonne on reading the finale script for the first time…
It was really sad to read – my initial reaction was obviously emotional. It was even harder to watch. I found it very upsetting to watch as an audience member because it was just so sad, with Debra dying and [Dexter] leaving Harrison and Hannah…

I mean, the whole thing just left me feeling so uneasy. It wasn’t an easy finale to watch, but I think that was the point. It wasn’t tied up neatly with a bow.

Yvonne on Hannah’s post-TV future…
Contrary to what other people might think about Hannah, I do think that she, at the end of the day, just wanted to have a happy life. She just wanted to find somebody – I don’t think she ever thought that she would, so when she did find Dexter, that was her dream come true.

I think that she does have the potential to be a good mother, providing that nobody gets in her way! That was, in my mind, always the reason why she eliminated people – because they got in her way, or tried to prevent her from just moving on in her life…

Yvonne on fan reaction to the Dexter finale…
I think it’s absolutely an impossible task [to try to please everyone]. There’s so many differing opinions and there are people who love certain characters and hate other characters, and there’s disputes.

You definitely cannot please everyone at all. I mean, the finales that cause the most debate are the ones that are talked about the longest.

Yvonne on being a geek’s favourite…
I have embraced the whole culture. I remember when I first got here, I didn’t even know what Comic-Con was and I remember going with Chuck that first year, being completely overwhelmed and not understanding at all why there were thousands of people in one place dressed in costumes!

Over the years I’ve grown to love it. It’s one of my favourite things to do. It’s been really nice to have that support from my first show and then have that carry through and follow me into other stuff I’ve done, like Dexter and I, Frankenstein. It feels like a big family.
